After decimating the London Taxi and Private hire trade’s business model, it seems Uber have now set their sights on London’s airports.
Already in place is a holding system which is being used (illegally of course) at Gatwick. Cars are booked in automatically as the enter the parameters of the system.
The driver is then given 15 seconds to accept. After acceptance, they are allocated a queue position number.
The company boasts that because of the amount of PR, publicity and advertising planned, drivers won’t have to wait long, unlike the Feeder Park where drivers often do four hours.
Plus don’t forget, many of these travellers already have Uber accounts.
Airport Cabbies will obviously point to the fact that minicab firm Addison Lee, have been doing this for years, but let’s remember Addi Lee’s prices are considerably higher than Uber’s rate unsurged.
It’s also no good sitting back saying “doesn’t affect me, as I don’t work the port,” but cast your memory back to the period when the air space was closed due to the ash cloud.
This week, Uber drivers received an email from the company which states:
We know that airport pick ups and drop offs can be a headache for drivers: it’s not clear where to pick up from, it’s often difficult to reach your passenger and explain where to meet, there’s no queuing system and sometimes it has felt the flat fares aren’t fair.
Good news!
We’ve listened to your feedback and worked with our engineers to bring you a number of improvements to the airport pickup experience that will make life better for you, our valued partners! Key changes include:
Clearer and fairer flat rates
Reimbursement for parking charges added to the fare
Airport queuing system
Better pick-up locations
The changes will go live for X and XL on Monday 22nd December. We’ll send you a reminder next week!
CHANGES TO FLAT FARES
Airport Flat fares to Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport and London City Airport are going up for all car types. On average, fares are going up by 5% to 15%. Plus, flat fare zones will now be more intuitive: an E postcode is East London, a W post code is West London, etc.
We will email you with a link to the full schedule of fares next week.
Please note, there is no flat fare for Luton or Stansted airports.
VIRTUAL AIRPORT QUEUEING SYSTEM
The typical Uber system of matching a rider to the nearest driver works well in the city centre, but can be frustrating at the airport. We have worked with our engineering team to bring you a better option, designed just for airports!
To make things fairer, we’re introducing a queueing system . When you come into airport area, you’ll be told your position in the queue. When you reach the front, you’ll be sent the next request – you’ll have around 15 seconds to accept so make sure you’re ready! This means that the driver who arrived first will get the first request – no one will spend a long time waiting while watching other drivers get all the requests.
PICK-UP LOCATIONS
There has been some confusion as to where it is safe to pick up passengers, and airports are closely watching for drivers picking up where they shouldn’t be. From Monday 22nd December, when collecting from the airport, you should park your car in the short stay car park at the terminal and make your way to arrivals to meet your passenger.
We will also provide you with an Uber sign to hold up so your rider can find you. Read on for information on when and where to pick up your sign.
We’ll be notifying all passengers coming into London Heathrow, London Gatwick and London City Airports of the new airport pick up system so they will know to meet you in arrivals.
ENDS.

French Taxi drivers are planning to block the main roadways into Paris on Monday 15th December, after a court rejected a bid to ban the amateur car service UberPop, while the minicab company continued to battle lawsuits in several other countries.
Its been suggested we should flash demo the French Embassy in support of tomorrows French taxi drivers strike v Uber.
If you are on Twitter, please look out for tweets from @Flash_Demo

How much does it cost to buy a clean background check in India’s capital? Drivers for Uber Technologies Inc. say the equivalent of $130.
Uber, one of the most highly valued U.S. technology startups, requires drivers in India to submit a character certificate endorsed by police. This can be obtained for a bribe regardless of qualifications, according to three drivers for the company. Police deny this.
The Dec. 6 rape of a 26-year-old office worker in a well-to-do section of New Delhi has sparked a national debate on how to regulate taxis, long considered one of India’s safer options for getting around. Delhi banned Uber from operating and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has called on states to ban all web-based taxi services until stricter rules are in place.
“It’s not very rare for this kind of thing to happen here,” Raj Kumar, who started driving for San Francisco-based Uber three months ago, said of the rape. “This time, it’s getting headlines because a foreign company is involved.”
A document from police certifying good character can be bought for 8,000 rupees ($130), Kumar said. A license and registration can be obtained without taking a driving test or passing a vehicle inspection for 4,000 rupees, he added. Two other Uber drivers in Delhi — Manoj Shah and Kulbhushan, who goes by one name — confirmed the prices.
Shiv Kumar Yadav, 32, the driver accused of rape, is a resident of the city of Mathura, 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of New Delhi. In August, he received a “character certificate” from Delhi police stating he had never been “involved in any criminal offense.”
‘National Shame’
Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday told lawmakers the document was a forgery. Uber lacked the local permit needed to operate legally in Delhi and will remain banned until it receives the necessary licensing, he said.
“Rape is a national shame,” Singh said. He vowed to take “all steps” to ensure justice in the case, including closed-circuit cameras, clearer taxi regulation and phone helplines for women.
Crimes against women in New Delhi are increasing after protests last year forced authorities to prioritize gender-related accusations, instead of dismissing complaints filed by women. This year, 13,230 cases of crime committed on women were registered, compared with 11,479 a year earlier, India’s junior Home Minister Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary wrote to parliament last week.
Covered Face
Yadav didn’t comment to reporters when he showed up to court yesterday with his face covered. He doesn’t yet have a lawyer, according to police, who say he confessed to the crime under interrogation.
Police have recorded Yadav’s statement and completed the process of gathering evidence, which they believe will be enough for conviction, Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner of police for Delhi’s north district, said today in a phone interview. While Yadav will be produced in court again tomorrow, he won’t be formally charged for another 15 to 20 days, Verma said.
Police have reached out to a second victim who told NDTV news channel yesterday that Yadav sexually assaulted her in an Uber car last month. She has yet to file a police report, Verma said.
The victim, 26, told authorities that she fell asleep in the taxi and woke up to find the driver molesting her. He then threatened her with physical violence, sexually assaulted her and dropped her off at her home with a warning to not tell anyone about the incident, according to authorities.
Weak System
About half of Delhi’s taxi drivers don’t even need the police certificate to operate in the capital because they hold licenses from other parts of the country, according to Jaspal Singh, a partner at Valoriser Consultants, a Delhi-based company that advises on urban transportation.
“Everyone is asleep at the wheel, and no one is addressing the problem of safety and accountability,” Singh said. “The system is weak and we don’t have a stringent background check. It’s very easy to play the system.”
Upon being notified of the rape allegations, Uber provided authorities with the driver’s name, photograph, bank-verified address and vehicle details, the company said in a blog post. Uber’swebsite says it provides the “safest rides on the road” and conducts “background checks you can trust.”
“We will work with the government to establish clear background checks currently absent in their commercial transportation licensing programs,” Travis Kalanick, Uber’s chief executive officer, said in a blog post. “We will also partner closely with the groups who are leading the way on women’s safety here in New Delhi and around the country and invest in technology advances to help make New Delhi a safer city for women.”
Police Certificate
The police certificate is a key elements of Uber’s background check in India, which isn’t as stringent as those required in the U.S., according to a person familiar with the situation, who asked not to be identified because he’s not authorized to speak to the media. The company doesn’t see how it can be blamed because the government approved Yadav’s license, registration and character certificate, the person said.
“We’re waiting for an official communication from the government about the ban,” Uber spokesman Karun Arya said by phone yesterday. He declined to further comment on the case. Uber last week said it raised $1.2 billion at a $40 billion valuation to boost its international expansion.
‘Bad Name’
Companies that hire drivers from other taxi businesses without a license are in violation of city law and have discredited the business, according to India’s Association of Radio Taxis, a cab lobby that doesn’t represent Uber.
“Any and everyone should be welcome to operate in India, so long as they are working according to the law of the land,” Rajiv Vij, founder-member of the taxi group, told reporters yesterday in New Delhi. “Violating the laws and rules governing the taxi industry have resulted in such heinous crimes taking place and bringing a bad name to the entire industry.”
Yadav had been acquitted of a rape charge in 2011 after spending seven months in jail, according to police deputy commissioner Verma. Police are also investigating Yadav for forgeries, he said.
Despite the prevalence of fake documents, Verma blamed companies like Uber for circumventing safeguards, even while saying the company has fully cooperated with the investigation.
Uber Drivers
“Why are people choosing Uber over a road-side taxi? Because they’re told they won’t be cheated or attacked when they hire an Uber,” Verma said. “But not only have Uber executives acknowledged that they have not requested any background checks, they aren’t asking all of their drivers for verification.”
While the Uber app yesterday showed taxis still available in central New Delhi, drivers have been asked to stop picking up passengers until the situation is resolved, according to Kulbhushan, who has been working with the company since August.
“They’ve also asked us not to join any other companies yet,” said Kulbhushan, who was earning four-times as much with Uber than with his previous employer. “It would be a major setback if I had to go back to my old job.”

A one man crackdown on rogue taxi and private hire drivers and attacks on cabbies by a Cambridge police officer has been praised amid calls for more CCTV cameras in the back of cabs.
Sgt Ian Wood has been praised by Cambridge Hackney Carriage Association (CHCA) for tackling private hire cab drivers flaunting traffic laws and his efforts to keep drivers safe.
The officer has called for more CCTV in taxis to protect drivers from alcohol-fuelled violence.
Paul Bradley, a CHCA spokesman,
Taxi Driver Paul Bradley said: “The CHCA is proud to be working alongside the authorities and especially Sgt Wood. He is very keen to clean up the trade and make the city a safer and more pleasant place for the public. He has kept to his word in respect to solutions to problems we have discussed and am delighted that it has started to slowly make a difference.”
Sgt Wood has been the sergeant on the city centre problem solving team since July.
He said: “From the outset, I have been in regular dialogue with both the council enforcement team and the CHCA – and have tasked members of my team to identify points of contact with all of the major taxi firms who operate across the county.
“I recognise that taxi drivers sometimes have a challenging job dealing with intoxicated and occasionally abusive or violent members of the public – in addition to the challenging traffic conditions in the city centre.
“I also aspire to get more CCTV installed into the vehicles, to improve driver and customer safety in due course.”
Sgt Wood and Cambridge City Council, are also targeting rogue private hire cabs.
Robert Osbourn, the council’s licensing and enforcement manager, said: “In licensing taxis and private hire cars for people to use, we have public safety uppermost in our thoughts. There are rigorous tests of a driver’s suitability, including their potential criminal background and their knowledge of the law and the local area.”

Let’s treble this man’s wages and get him and 100 more like him into the Capital.
Meanwhile, in Birmingham.
An unlicensed driver tried to explain he was taking his neighbours home. They just happened to be undercover SPT officers. His vehicle was immediately seized for no Insureance cover!
Well done Birminghams Taxi Police.

A SEX attacker who abducted two terrified teenage girls when they got into his car thinking it was a taxi, has been jailed for 11 years.
The teenagers got into Sail Uddin’s Polo and asked to be taken home, but were driven to Hendon, in Sunderland, and subjected to sex assault ordeals that left them hysterical and terrified.
Newcastle Crown Court heard one of the girls had managed to dial 999 from a mobile phone and was able to give a description of where she and her friend had been taken to by the stranger.
When officers stopped Uddin’s vehicle, which contained a collection of sex aids, at Hendon, both victims were in the car, crying uncontrollably.
Judge John Milford, QC, told Uddin: “They got, unwittingly, into your vehicle in the belief it was a taxi.
“You, I am satisfied, after you had finished work and despite being a married man with a large family, had gone into the city centre looking for exactly what you found, which was a drunk young woman, in fact you found two.
“I have no doubt what you were looking for was to have sex with such a young woman, one way or another.
“This is a case where there was abduction and a significant degree of planning. It was a terrifying experience.” The court heard both girls, who the judge said were “young, intelligent and have everything to live for” have been left deeply traumatised.
The judge said he hoped the victims could go on to make happy lives for themselves.
During the trial Uddin had blamed the girls for making sexual advances towards him, which jurors rejected outright.
Prosecutor Anne Richardson said the girls were so frightened by what happened to them that they struggled to talk to the police when Uddin’s car was pulled over.
The court heard a female police officer managed to pacify the girls enough for them to tell her what had happened.
Uddin, 43, of Hendon, Sunderland, had denied two sex assault charges, but was found guilty by a jury after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court last month.
The court heard during the trial the girls had been on a night out together in February and had decided to go home in the early hours of the morning. The girls were taken to a secluded spot at Hendon beach, where they soon realised they were in trouble.
One girl managed to get out of the car with a mobile phone, saying she was just going to call her mother, but instead called 999 and described the scene to the operator using local landmarks.
Uddin, who was working as a chef at the time, denied wrongdoing.
The judge ordered him to sign the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.
Deputy chief constable Steve Ashman, of Northumbria Police, said: “Uddin preyed on the vulnerability of two girls who were under the influence of alcohol in the early hours following a night out in Sunderland city centre.
“The driver purported to be taking the girls home, but instead took them to an area where they were both sexually assaulted.
“One of the females managed to call police and officers attended the area, where Uddin’s vehicle was stopped and he was arrested.
“These are absolutely appalling crimes which were terrifying experiences for the two girls involved, and I’d like to commend them for their bravery in speaking with police, and throughout the investigation and court proceedings.
“There’s absolutely no place in our communities for this behaviour and we welcome today’s verdict, which sends out a clear message that the actions of offenders such as Uddin will not be tolerated.”

Just a little reminder to keep your guard up and be vigilant while driving round at night.
Friday night, Saturday Morning 13:12:2014 1:59 am:
I was subjected to a worrying incident by a group of three young men. Two stood in front of the cab, one tried to open the bonnet with some type of tool he was carrying.
I believe the intention was to open the bonnet and wait for the driver (me) to get out of the cab and close. Therefore compromising the security of the Taxi for the third member of the team to enter and take personal possessions, or in an extreme case, possibly get in and drive away.
I don’t think they’ve perfected their modus operandi yet, as I just put my foot down, drove at them and forced them aside.
You have to be careful though not to run them over, no matter how tempting, as this could leave you open to prosecution.
I believe my actions were completely justifiable as I was carrying passengers and their safety was paramount.
Best advice, should this happen to you:
* Keep doors locked and stay inside.
* Hazards on.
* Full beam on.
* Elbow on horn.
* Wait for back up, wait till safe.
Haven’t heard of anyone else being attacked in this way yet! I just hope these guys have been taught a lesson (I know one won’t be dancing much this weekend). If people need key services,
Low Rate Lockmsith in Elk Grove can be checked out!
I have full, time stamped video clip of incident and will be forwarding on to the Met after first showing to my legal representation, just to clarify my legal position.
Sadly from past experience, I feel I’m just waisting my time again. Would probably receive better attention if it were a video of a Taxi with no IDs badges showing.
