The San Francisco-based multinational taxi firm Uber is unfairly driving existing taxi and minicab companies out of business, George Galloway claimed today.
In one of the last parliamentary motions to be submitted before the dissolution of parliament the Bradford West MP called for an urgent review of regulations and legislation to prevent existing taxi companies being forced out of business due to unfair competition.
“There’s no doubt that Uber is out to dominate the market by undercutting and by potentially compromising safety standards,” he said. “The government has to ensure that there’s a level playing field and that Uber has to observe the same rules and regulations as the local companies. There needs to be a thoroughgoing review of these to ensure that there is no lowering of standards in provision to the public.”
