Black cab, Tube map and the London bus among ‘greatest ever’ British designs

The Tube map, black cab and London’s Routemaster bus have been named among the top 10 in a list of the greatest ever British designs.

Kingston University professor Catherine McDermott conducted the study, which involved a public vote, into the UK’s 25 most iconic conceptions.

Among other great British designs were the red phone box, which came top, the Spitfire aircraft and the miniskirt.

But London put in a strong showing, with its famous if now discontinued Routemaster bus placing second, and the black cab as well as the Tube map coming in at sixth and seventh respectively.

The London Eye, Wembley Stadium and the 2012 Olympic Torch also feature in the list, produced to mark the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone.

Professor McDermott, director of curating contemporary design at Kingston University, led a panel of judges who chose who selected 30 great designs before putting the matter to 2,000 members of the public to arrive at the top 25 list.
